Compliance checklist for subcontractors working with councils in Victoria

The core business, insurance, licence and safety documents Victorian subcontractors are commonly asked for.

Compliance checklist for subcontractors working with councils in Victoria

Victorian councils and principal contractors often ask for the same groups of documents before work starts: proof of business identity, proof of insurance, proof of competency and proof that you can work safely. If any one of those is missing, onboarding slows down.

At a minimum, most subcontractors should expect to provide ABN details, business contact details, public liability insurance, workers compensation information where relevant, trade-specific licences or registration, and white card evidence for construction work. Depending on the job, you may also need SWMS, inductions, capability statements, environmental or quality declarations, and vendor onboarding forms.

The easiest mistake to make is treating every new request like a fresh admin job. In practice, most of the content is repeated. What changes is the client context. If you already have a clean, current pack of business, insurance, licence and safety documents, you can tailor the final five percent instead of rebuilding the entire pack.
